IHC 2025

Reflections on the Grand Challenges of HCI in Brazil (GranDIHC-BR 2025-2035)

In 2024, the Brazilian Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community officially launched the HCI Grand Challenges 2025-2035, promoting a strategic agenda to guide research, teaching, outreach, and innovation. A year later, on the eve of HCI 2025 in Belo Horizonte, we proposed a one-day in-person meeting in the historic city of Ouro Preto to reflect, discuss, and co-create collective strategies for addressing these challenges.

The event, titled “Culture, Connections, and the Grand Challenges of HCI,” will be a pre-congress focused on community integration, experience sharing, and planning concrete actions.

We hope to welcome participants from different regions of Brazil, especially those already traveling to the XXIV Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (HCI 2025). The city of Ouro Preto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a charming city that combines baroque art, rich Minas Gerais cuisine, and stunning natural landscapes. In addition to its important architectural heritage and museums, it offers visitors a unique experience with eco-tourism options along trails, waterfalls, and nearby mountains: a perfect invitation to combine knowledge, culture, and contact with nature during the event.

Objectives

  • Bring together the HCI community in an inspiring city and collaborate on an agenda of concrete actions related to the Challenges;
  • Discuss the developments of the first year of the HCI Grand Challenges;
  • Encourage collective and interinstitutional proposals to advance these Challenges;
  • Encourage exchanges between senior researchers, young researchers, and students;
  • Value Brazilian culture and history as part of the event experience.

Event Format

  • Short thought-provoking sessions (lightning talks and panels);
  • Group dynamics based on the themes of the Grand Challenges;
  • Discussion groups to develop collective proposals.

Target Audience

  • HCI researchers in Brazil;
  • Undergraduate and graduate students interested in the field;
  • Members of the CEIHC and SBC.

Submissions

Interested participants should submit a short position paper (up to 4 pages plus 1 page of references) with ideas, approaches, and agendas related to the proposed challenges. Submissions should indicate actions or perspectives related to the HCI Grand Challenges that can guide community action toward overcoming or addressing these grand challenges.

Papers should include:

  • Reports and analyses of what was accomplished in 2024–2025 in response to the HCI Grand Challenges;
  • Critical reflections on the directions outlined in the challenges;
  • Proposals for paths, strategies, and partnerships for the coming years;
  • Identification of gaps, opportunities, and partnerships needed to advance the community’s goals.

Submissions must be submitted by August 12, 2025, via the J E M S 3 system, using the S B C article template on the IHC25 website. Submissions must not be anonymous. Final papers will be published in SBC Open Lib – SOL.

The document must contain:

  • Title;
  • Authors and affiliations;
  • Abstract;
  • Description of the challenge(s) addressed;
  • Contributions, reflections, or proposals for advancing the field;
  • References (when applicable).

Submissions will be evaluated by an editorial committee and accepted articles will be presented and discussed during the pre-event. The results will be released by 08/22/2025.
